i'm in hong kong now.. will be here from 23rd feb to 14th april.. i'm attached to hong kong university (HKU) at the faculty of medicine, dept of biochemistry.. it's actually quite fun here.. i'm here with crystal.. the weather is cold here.. it's about 12 to 20 dC.. it's esp cold when it rains and there's strong wind.. hahah.. u practically froze on the spot when the wind hits.. u can feel the wind blowing inside your jacket..
i'm currently stayin at one of the hostel at the uni.. well.. HKU campus is quite confusing.. there's 2 campuses which is about 5 min drive from each other.. yet u cant walk from one campus to the other.. so it's pretty annoying esp when i'm located at the smaller campus and i have to go down to the main campus if i need to settle certain admin stuff..
take this stupid internet for example.. i had some prob gettin it connected for the 1st few days.. after which we realised that we need to register our network cards with the HKU computer service centre b4 we can use it.. the thing is the computer centre is only open from 9 to 5.. and we're at the lab from 10 to 5.. so we have to wake up early in the morn to chiong down to the main campus and chiong back to the lab.. so frustrating.. we have to go down so many times and the stupid net is still not working in our rooms.. we have to sit at the pantry to use the net everytime.. we're still tryin to settle this prob.. hai.. irritating..
guess wad we're doing in the lab? hahah.. well.. we have a mentor.. angmoh one.. hahah.. we suspect he's from germany but we haven got ard to asking him bout it cuz he's quite quiet and shy.. he doesnt seem like he wanna talk much.. he's a master student doin his research at the lab.. he's the only angmoh there.. he's extremely patient and he feels guilty so easily.. until he makes us feel guilty for always making him wait and wastin his precious time.. he can finish all the work early but cuz of us he always had to stay late at the lab and even go back durin wkends to finish his work..
we're basically doing things like PCR, gel eletrophoresis, cell culture, mouse genotyping, dissecting mice, isolating organs and slicing organs.. we watched him cut off 4 days old baby mice heads and took out their brains to culture the neural stem cells.. hahah.. they were so cute originally but... u go imagine..! well.. we did some killing as well.. it's actually quite fun and not as gross as u may think.. when u're the one doing it u wont feel dat it's gross.. hahaa.. evilness.. well.. we may be doing other stuff i wont noe but i realised dat this is a really gd opportunity for me.. i really learnt a lot of things that i noe i might never have a chance to learn ever or easily.. there are a number of PhD students there as well.. mostly are from china but they are really nice.. some of them are quite funny.. they make us laugh.. hahah.. most of them are like in their late twenties or early thirties.. so they really treat us like 2 lil girls.. eg. one of the guys made us guess how many mice he kept in his tiny cage.. he practially forced us to guess a particular no.. dat was so lame..
we did some exploring and shopping.. but we have yet to get anything substantial.. mostly jus some neccessities.. hahah.. we've been to central area and kowloon.. we were thinkin of headin to macau, disneyland and victoria peak!! hahah.. we didnt take much pics though.. cuz always forget to bring it out with us.. =)
