Atonement is a really good drama/romance movie. It'll probably bore guys out since it's so literature-fied. The plot is easy to understand but I have no idea how it manage to get me glued to the screen. No wonder it won so many awards. Totally worthed watching.
Briony, the younger sister of the Tallis family saw her elder sister, Cecilia(Keira Knightley) making out with Robbie (James McAvoy), their housekeeper's son. She was only 13 that time and totally misunderstood the whole situation. She somehow reported him and got him caught. After being taken away, Robbie chose to enter the army instead of the prison. He was sent to France to fight the war. Cecilia, on the other hand, left the Tallis family to work as a nurse. She made Robbie promised that he will come back to her.
Briony grew up and worked as a nurse as well. She never got over the guilt of being the one who caused Cecilia and Robbie so much pain. The story continues on how the 3 of them continue to live their life due to one stupid misunderstanding. And it ends with an elderly Briony being interviewed.
The whole misunderstanding is stupid. Yet, I dont blame Briony. She was young and innocent. She thought Robbie as a pervert. Her crush on Robbie further escalated the whole situation. I just totally pity Cecilia and Robbie. The whole movie had this really subtle intensity going on constantly. You can feel the agony. The guilt that Briony has to live with her entire life. The longing that Cecilia and Robbie had for each other. It was the love and promise that kept the both of them alive in the times of war and unrest.
